What a difficult person Jesus is! After throwing the money changers out of the temple he is challenged by the authorities “By what authority are you doing these things?” A fair question to which Jesus gives a question in return – “John’s ministry – from heaven or earth?” Not wanting to commit themselves the authorities confess ignorance which allows Jesus to refuse to answer.
How convenient it would be if we could find straightforward answers to the difficult questions of life. The Hebrews in the wilderness asked one of the biggest questions of all – “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Saint Paul was in no doubt that in the person of Jesus God was truly among us. In Philippians 2 he writes “… though Jesus was in the form of God …” yet even with this affirmation on his lips Paul encourages each one of us to exercise our gift of faith and choice. He goes on –
“ …work out your own salvation with fear and trembling …” It seems the life of faith is a life-long journey – no absolute certainties, but food for the journey will be provided.
