ULURU STATEMENT FROM THE HEART

In a somewhat unusual move  the Vicar used the Ash Wednesday services to read from a document entitled

ULURU STATEMENT FROM THE HEART

I commented that this was an entirely appropriate thing to do on Ash Wednesday, a day that marks the beginning of the most significant period of reflection in the Christian calendar.

What is this statement?

In mid 2017 (the 50th anniversary year of the referendum vote to recognise Aboriginal People) a Constitutional Convention was held at Uluru drawing hundreds of Aboriginal People from all over Australia.

Cape York leader Noel Pearson said there was no enthusiasm for a statement of acknowledgment of Indigenous people in the constitution.  He said the delegates agreed that a parliamentary “voice” would be more “substantive”.  “It will have a more practical impact on Aboriginal people’s place in the democracy,” he said.

“That’s what they’ve chosen rather than some sort of nice words of acknowledgement.”

A copy of the Uluru Statement from the Heart is on the noticeboard, and other copies are available.
