THE WIDOW’S MIGHTY MITE

Mk 12: 38 – 44

“THE WIDOW’S MIGHTY MITE”

Here we have yet another account of another widow who gives all she has. The rich gave more, but her offering is her all!  Jesus tell His disciples that out of her deep poverty it was:  “ALL SHE HAD TO LIVE ON” (v 44) (Amplified).

Money was a matter that Jesus often addressed, and in too many societies, too many people are easily seduced by the lure of wealth which claims: Success, Happiness, Prominence and Power et al.

But Jesus gave up a reasonably comfortable life after thirty years,

to become an itinerant evangelist, living off the land – not in five star resorts.  He steered clear of all the trappings of wealth, saying that even the animals had a more secure existence (Mt 8:20).

Moreover, He encouraged His followers to live simply and not to be tempted by money, for God takes care, even of the sparrows (Mt 10:29).

Rather, Jesus desires that we be rich in faith and hope in His heavenly Father, who knows all our needs.

Reflection

Jesus’ last gift was His dying prayer:

“FATHER INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT” (Lk 23:46).

His whole life was lived in total trust.
