IS RELIGION A PRIVATE AFFAIR
1 Cor 12:12-31 IS RELIGION A PRIVATE AFFAIR?
“ALL OF YOU TOGETHER ARE THE ONE BODY OF CHRIST AND EACH ONE OF YOU IS A SEPERATE AND NECESSARY” (v 27 – Living New Testament)
When it comes to considering Christianity, the reality surely is that we cannot be Christians alone. We are part of each other in the household of faith. An analogy given to us by the apostle to the Gentiles clearly makes this point. Christians are the body of Christ.
Individually we are all members of that body, just a foot or a hand, an ear on an eye, is integral to the whole. There are always separate members, he says, yet one body. No part of that organism can exclude another by saying, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, insisted the Apostle, even supposedly weaker members are indispensable. Caring for all the parts of the body is essential, the realisation being that if one part suffers, all suffer together. So also, if one part is honoured the entire body rejoices.
And in the same way, the Church, the body of Christ, needs all its parts, all its members, in order to function properly. We all have a vocation and ministry to perform within the church. None of us is dispensable. We are all needed!
For Reflection: It was said of the company of believers in the infant church that they were “OF ONE HEART AND SOUL.”
