Ascension Day

Thursday was Ascension Day when we remember and reflect on Jesus’ ascensionto heaven after his death and resurrection. Just before his ascension to the Father, Jesus says in Matthew 28:18  “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples …” His ascension gives us:

Confidence that Jesus has ALL authority over everything and everyone. Whatever our circumstances he is King and Lord over them: illness, disability, relationship issues, money problems, sinful habits, the needs of the church, persecution etc. We can pray confidently to our ascended King confident of his power.

Comfort in our suffering. There is now a human being in the Godhead – God forever has a human heart, seen in the wounded Lamb on the throne (Rev. 5:6). His scars show his compassion and identification with all our human struggles and sorrows. We can pray sure that God fully understands our issues.

Mission and purpose. ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go …” The ascended Lord Jesus sends out his people to enable others to hear about him and know him as we teach, heal and minister to other human needs in Jesus’ name. In his authority and grace he gives us a part in his mission to the world.                                                               -Bruce Milne
